Maguire Sees Red as Bournemouth Peg Back Man Utd Twice in Chaotic 2-2 Draw

A Night to Forget for Maguire, a Night of Mixed Emotions for Everyone Else

Harry Maguire picked a truly terrible day to have a shocker. Hours after earning a recall to the England squad, the Manchester United defender was sent off at the Vitality Stadium as Bournemouth fought back twice to earn a 2-2 draw on Friday evening. You genuinely could not script it.

Michael Carrick's side led on two separate occasions in the second half, yet walked away with just a single point from a match they really should have wrapped up. For a team scrapping to stay in the top four, that is the sort of result that leaves you staring at the ceiling at 3am.

A Second Half That Had Everything

The first 45 minutes were largely forgettable, a cagey affair with neither side willing to commit. Then the second half arrived and evidently someone spiked the half-time oranges.

It all kicked off in the 61st minute when Alex Jimenez pulled back Matheus Cunha in the box, giving away a penalty. Bruno Fernandes duly converted from the spot, bagging his 8th Premier League goal of the season. Routine stuff, and United looked comfortable.

That comfort lasted roughly six minutes. Ryan Christie equalised in the 67th minute to drag Bournemouth level, and suddenly the Vitality was bouncing again.

United regrouped and retook the lead at 71 minutes in slightly fortuitous fashion. Fernandes swung in a corner that deflected off Senesi, then James Hill, before bundling into the net. An own goal, but Carrick's men were not about to complain.

The Maguire Moment

Then came the 78th minute, and the incident that will dominate the headlines. Maguire hauled back Evanilson as the Bournemouth striker threatened to break clear inside the box. The referee had no hesitation: straight red card, penalty awarded. Junior Kroupi, the Premier League's top-scoring teenager, stepped up and calmly slotted home in the 81st minute. 2-2, and United were down to ten men for the closing stages.

What made it all the more galling for United was the perceived inconsistency. Just minutes before Maguire's dismissal, Adrien Truffert appeared to make a near-identical challenge on Amad Diallo inside the Bournemouth box. No penalty, no card, nothing. Carrick called the decision "baffling" after the match, and Fernandes was equally unimpressed in his post-match comments. You can see their point.

What the Numbers Say

Bournemouth edged possession with 55.2% to United's 44.8%, and had 16 shots to United's 14, though both sides managed five on target. Andoni Iraola's side have now drawn five consecutive matches and remain on an impressive 11-game unbeaten run, sitting 10th with 42 points.

For United, the arithmetic is getting uncomfortable. They stay 3rd on 55 points, but sit six behind Manchester City in 2nd and only four ahead of Aston Villa in 4th. Dropping points at the Vitality, in front of just 11,250 supporters, was not in the plan.

The Verdict

This was a match United controlled for large spells but failed to kill off, and a refereeing controversy that will rumble on well into the international break. Maguire's red card was hard to argue with in isolation, but the lack of a similar call for the Truffert challenge on Diallo will leave a bitter taste.

Bournemouth, meanwhile, deserve credit for sheer persistence. Twice behind, twice they hauled themselves back. That sort of resilience is why Iraola's side continue to punch above their weight this season.

For Maguire, the timing could hardly have been worse. An England recall followed by a red card is the sort of double-header nobody wants on their CV.
